Wednesday June 11th Dr, Edwards DVD presentation. Schedule of events

May 12 2008 More than 500 ducks die on Alberta Tarsands Tailings pond. Premier Stelmach suggests that this incident although unacceptable is no worst than other bird deaths from other hazards. He went on to say that wind turbines account for more than 30,000 deaths per year. A recent study clearly indicates otherwise as 1.5 birds per year actually fall victim to modern wind turbines. Check out an artists rendition of what the entrance to the tarsands facilities might look like if the tarponds were actually clean and safe. Click on photo for larger image.

April 2008  A new group called "Water Matters" has been formed and has been working with the Pembina Institute on water related issues. They have a newly released report called "Curing Environmental Dis-Integration" http://www.water-matters.org/docs/integration-report-v2.pdf  (1MB) which dives into the ongoing water related issues in Alberta and how they are connected with landuse and development policies. Much of the discussion surrounds the current approval system which uses silo-effect decision making while overlooking potential cummulative impacts. An online survey is also available for individuals or organizations to contribute to the discussions surrounding water matters on the 'Water Matters" website https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=BTNKkgUOsDa68r3h_2b4OKqA_3d_3d

Bruce Power has submitted it's site applications to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and PRES has obtained digital copies. You will find them posted on the Nuclear Power  page of this website.

Date  Nov, 19th 2007; members of PRES and several other Alberta organizations bring their concerns about nuclear power to the Alberta Legislature. People from Calgary, Ft. St John, Whitecourt, Edmonton, and many other Alberta communities to send a clear message to the Alberta Government that we want this province to stay "NUCLEAR FREE". The convoy stopped in the communities of Valleyview, Fox Creek, Whitecourt, Slave Lake and Athabasca on it's treck to Edmonton. Concerned citizens joined forces in the cool weather to protest on the steps of the legislature hearing speaches by concerned groups and MLA's. The group then submitted some 1500 petition names as an indicator of public concern from northern Alberta communities. Meetings were then held with a number of ministers, and opposition party MLA's.

Date   Feb, 22nd 2008;  members of PRES and surrounding communities greet Premier Stelmach during his election campaign stop in Peace River. Mr. Stelmach did take a few moments of his time to shake hands with one of our members and accepted a "KEEP ALBERTA NUCLEAR FREE" shirt from our organization. The premier indicated that he was wanting to work with Albertans on this issue after the expert taskforce has had an opportunity to study the implications of bringing Nuclear power to our province. The message from PRES to the Premier was that an increasing number of Peace Country residents have done their own research on nuclear power and are saying "NO THANKS".
