Dear Mr. Warkentin:
I am writing to express my support for your government’s commitment to mandatory limits to greenhouse gas emissions. As well, I am pleased to see that your government is taking action to restrict the number of toxic chemicals in our environment. I am, however, concerned with the timetable for implementing reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. As you know, Alberta is an economic hothouse at this time. New oilsands, upgrader and refinery projects are being proposed and approved on a daily basis. Some of these are right in this constituency in the Peace River Oil Sands area. Although the technology now exists to reduce greenhouse gas emissions dramatically, industry has no incentive to use it under existing laws and regulations. I see no reason why all new projects cannot be required to meet a higher standard immediately. Existing projects and those under construction can be given a longer time frame to fall into line. By “a longer time frame”, however, I do not mean till 2050. Surely a single generation—about 20 years—should be long enough to see standards implemented fully. I am pleased that Prime Minister Harper has agreed to a suggestion by Jack Layton to send the proposed Act to committee for further study. I hope your government will be open to suggestions to strengthen it and speed up its implementation. Thank you for considering my opinion. I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a very happy and fulfilling new year.
Yours truly,
Brenda Brochu P.S. Congratulations on the birth of your lovely daughter!
